The magnificent speaker for TAF’s Youth program was John Lin. One day he had us write down the names of the chapters of our life, if it was to be a book. Below is what I wrote down. To be honest, this was actually the rewrite.
PART I:
Birth - 3rd
4th - 5th (The Divorce)
6th-8th
Silver and Blue Through and Through
From Taipei to Kenting
PART II:
Fighting Illini
Taiwanese American
Asian American
The Big Picture
PART III:
TASC
DAD
End of Childhood
TAF
I think it’s interesting to see how/why I named certain chapters what I did. “Birth-3rd” and “6th-8th” were just years of my life where nothing super significant happened. I didn’t feel the need for each year to have its own chapter, thus they were lumped together and given a generic name. Other years seemed to have a theme to them. Like “Fighting Illini” which was my freshman year at college, or “Asian American”, which was when I turned my focus onto the Asian American community. In Part III, I put all the biggest moments of my life. The memories and experiences that have helped shape me to who I am today and will influence who I will be in the future.
